Fun family activity: fruit picking in a Kentish farm
Something I’ve always wanted to do with my family is to go pick your own. We had missed the right time for strawberries in the summer so we grabbed our opportunity to visit Hewitts Farm in the Bromley borough, in Kent, to try it out.
It was a great activity to do as a family: getting some fresh air, choosing where to go (it’s pretty huge) and which fruit or vegetable to pick together. I also thoroughly enjoyed capturing photos of my child grabbing apples and pears and being amazed by the size of pumpkins in the field. We picked Discovery apples which, I realised later, are partially red inside and have a very unusual strawberry flavour, it’s like eating two fruits at the same time!
There were some great hiding spots too!
When you’re little, it’s not always to reach for the fruits in the trees but it might work out with some determination.
Overall, a good experience for our first PYO farm visit. My son helped me make a homemade apple compote when we got home. It’s great to get the satisfaction of making a meal or dessert out of the food you’ve picked up yourself. I think it’s great for kids (especially city children) to understand that apples don’t grow in cardboard boxes in the supermarket. We’ll definitely be back next year for some summer fruits.
